Cool stuff from the IAP2 Monthly Webinars

Each month, our Learning Webinars present a great opportunity for you to learn all sorts of new approaches and ideas that can work for your P2 projects. Case in point: the February webinar, which featured Core Values Award winners Carolyn Lukensmeyer of the National Institute for Civil Discourse in the US and David Plouffe of the City of Calgary, Alberta, Canada (view the webinar here.)

Carolyn’s project – the Creating Community Solutions Alliance – was named Project of the Year by IAP2 USA, and it is still going on, encouraging conversations – particularly among young people – on mental health issues. “Text. Talk. Act.” involves text messaging, social media and face-to-face discussion to help people decide how to strengthen mental health in their families, on campuses and in communities. Two more events are coming up, on April 14 and May 7.

David showed how a customized “card game” tool helped connect city employees right across the workforce in Calgary, with the “Corporate Cultural Transformation” project (IAP2 Canada Organization of the Year). The “game” is “Group Pattern Language” by Groupworks, and you can find out more about what it might be able to do for your project online or by email .

Our next two webinars promise to be exciting and stimulating ones, too. On Tuesday, March 10 (2pm Eastern), we’ll look at means of gathering feedback from an audience quickly and accurately, particularly in emotion-charged settings. Dr David Campt, whose forte is in facilitating discussions on racial issues (he was part of President Bill Clinton’s “Race Initiative” in the 90s) and Michael Lickers, Senior Advisor of Aboriginal Relations at Suncor Energy in Canada will join us for “Audience Response Systems in an Emotional Setting”.

Then, in April, we’ll hear from Down Under on setting up a framework for citizen engagement. Desley Renton of the City of Melbourne, Australia, will tell us about their project, which was honoured last year by the entire IAP2 Federation as Project of the Year. Join us on Tuesday, April 14 to learn more about why Melbourne citizens are reputed to be the most engaged, anywhere. Note the starting time: 4pm Eastern/1pm Pacific due to the time difference with Australia.
